Inspired to birth work after spending cozy nights listening her mother’s vividly told birth stories. Vanessa was the last of 4 children and recalls her mother gleaming with love and pride when she shared her stories, confessing, “You’ll never fully understand what love is until you have your own.” And it wasn’t until she birthed her first child, that it clicked. Merrick’s birth was a planned home birth-transport in 2011. In that hospital room along with a Midwife-turned-doula, Nurse Midwife, and her husband, she birthed a boy along with a new definition of love — unconditional and beyond comprehension.
Vanessa went on to graduate from a basic midwifery course with the Massachusetts Midwives Alliance, completed an in-person doula training, becoming certified with toLabor and Madriella, and trained as a Lactation Counselor with Healthy Children’s Center for Breastfeeding with certification with TALPP. She most recently completed the Evidence Based Birth (R) Instructor program and continues to enhance knowledge with various workshops and continued research. Vanessa is also an apprentice midwife under the supervision of a Certified Professional Midwife and NARM preceptor.
In 2013, Vanessa and her husband, Brendon were blessed with a daughter; Everleigh – experiencing the beautiful home water birth they always wished for. When not spending time with birthing families, Vanessa is deeply involved in her own, both at home and with my extended family in church where she participates in music ministry and children’s studies.
